about

The Deads was a big track for us back in the early days, greatly inspired by many-a-musos early 20s crushes, the icons, the legends, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley. The song landed soon after dissecting Thom’s guitar part from monster, Kid A track Optimistic and from a heavy, near-daily addiction to Jeff Buckley’s ‘Live in Chicago’ DVD. I vividly remember J writing his stinging bass line on his humble blue Squire Jazz in my bedroom when he was a mere 16 year old lad… singing the line back to each other, feeling pretty breezy about the track in our bucolic haze.

Credit due, the song’s arrangement originated from 2005 sessions when then drummer Oliver Court was behind the tom-toms. Being a huge Led Zep fan he played us Dazed and Confused and suggested a similar end section… that mangled with the progressive drum-heavy Sigur Ros ‘()’ sound gave birth to The Deads… The song went through various different forms, Cerys added his flare, a new arrangement was shaped up and we toured the song heavily in 2007 with Big Muffs dialled all the way up.

The EP recording sessions took place between October 31st and November 2nd 2007 again with aficionado and true gent Andy Rowland at Catseye Studios, near Lambourn, Berkshire. We experimented more with overdubs, new sounds, tambourine even… By that point Andy had taken over a room at the studio complex (now relocated to Gatehouse Studios) so we tracked with Cerys being in his own drum room whilst being projected onto a big screen into the control room when J and I were. We all felt we had stepped up from The Weight of This EP and were buzzing from what we were hearing coming back at us.

The very last mixing session was held in early March 2008, when J and I were en route to NYC for a week. We stopped off in Swindon, Andy picked us up, we went to the studio and laid down the final mixes, headed back to the station and got on the next train to Gatwick. Walking around Manhattan with the finished EP blaring from a CD walkman... Kings of the world, Port Erin, international baby. Coincidentally that trip lead us to us meeting and having our heads caved in by NYC guitar icon Gary Lucas and his band the Gods and Monsters at The Bowery Poetry Club Club. Our first real avant-garde / post-jazz experience –– it’s other-worldly impression still resonates today.

We held two EP release shows with the incredible support of Thrice Nipple Promotions to book-end the release tour. The first was at the 333 / Motherbar in Shoreditch on Saturday 18th April 2008 (with Kill It Kid who we asked to join us). We rattled home to a wild sold out launch show at Chapel Arts Centre(then Invention Studios) in Bath on Saturday 16th May 2008 with one of Bristol’s finest, The Transpersonals, supporting.

The Deads was the first track we released that received national radio play. It felt like some great arrival hearing the track on the radio getting numerous spins by Tom Robinson Music on BBC Radio 6 Music and sustained plays across the BBC Music Introducing network across the country. Who knew BBC Birmingham would be so into Port Erin?!

We were so happy with this EP, listening back to it brings back a lot of a special memories of an intense, fun and very busy time. We have lots of reviews, photos, footage to share over the next couple of weeks –– we hope you enjoy this snapshot of our journey.
